Wurstfest - New Braunfels Style

One of the heralds of Fall is Wurstfest! In New Braunfels we have a wonderful complex of beautiful buildings just for the "10 Day Salute To Sausage". That is not to say that you can get only sausage there... the vendors are varied and there is something yummy for everyone's taste buds!

Here you can find great German bands that vary by times and locations. We have a "big" tent, a "small" tent, and of course the Wurst Hall, all filled with fun, sometimes loud - accordion, omp-pa-pa or something equally unique to a German festival. I was never much of an accordion follower, but Wurstfest has made a believer out of me. In fact, Ron and I go over to San Antonio and attend the National Accordion Festival every year at La Villita. It is great fun... but back to Wurstfest.

Wurstfest is not only about sausage, it is about beer too.

We have a fun little subculture at Wurstfest called One Arm Raised. The "Armers" stand around on one Saturday evening for an hour with, you guessed it, their arm raised and beer in hand. Surprisingly it is a great way to meet people. Last year we met Stephen and Josh from Austrialia who saw us, raised their hands, and joined the group for an hour. There is no hidden political or dark agenda, just some silly fun with about 200 fellow thrill seekers. If you haven't done something silly in a while and need a fix, come join us. Sign up on their website and Mike (the founder) will print you out a name tag and some stickers to give out. After all, who doesn't want to be labeled a "Wurstfest Hottie"?

Don't worry about the kids not having anything to do here. There is a carnival with lots of rides for the little one. And did mention that everyone dances the "Chicken Dance". Yep, all ages... It is truly something to see. By the way, wear your favorite and funniest hat. You will be right is style. This is "partying" the New Braunfels style.

TIPS:
1. There is FREE parking in Landa Park for those that get there early.
2. If you want to join us for a Volksmarch (leasurly hiking tour of town), you can get a FREE ticket to Wurstfest.
3. The opening day of Wurstfest is FREE admission until 5 pm.
4. "The Biting Of The Sausage" on opening day is a New Braunfels tradition. Not many outsiders attend. It is a must do.
5. If all the sounds, heat/cold, sights, people, etc gets to be too much there is a warm/cool, quiet place to hang out and drink a beer or whatever that has great bathrooms. If you go out the back doors of the Wurst Hall, look for a small door across the courtyard. It leads to a smallish pub with the greatest beer bottle collection ever. Grab a chair upstairs or down and decompress.
6. Be prepared for LOTS of people is you come on the weekend. If you can manage it, come on a weekday or even a Friday for a less packed festival.
7. Do look for bargain coupons. I will try to post a link here too.
8. Do eat early, then snack later. The lines get long.
